There were + substantivo plural: There were three payments.
Negativa: there wasn't / there weren't, geralmente com any: There weren't any errors. There wasn't any money.
Pergunta: Was there...? / Were there...? Respostas curtas: Yes, there was. / No, there wasn't. Yes, there were. / No, there weren't.
Quantidade: How many + plural + were there? How much + incontável + was there?
Em português dizemos "teve um problema" ou "tinha muita gente". Em inglês, para existência, use there was / there were, não it was.

Erros comuns

Errado: ~~There was three errors.~~Certo: There were three errors.Com substantivo no plural, use were.
Errado: ~~There were a lot of traffic.~~Certo: There was a lot of traffic.Traffic é incontável e pede was, mesmo com a lot of.
Errado: ~~It was a problem with the payment.~~Certo: There was a problem with the payment."Teve / houve um problema" fala de existência: there was. It was descreve algo já mencionado.
Errado: ~~Was there any problems?~~Certo: Were there any problems?Problems está no plural, então a pergunta usa were.
