There is / there are

Regras

Selecione um trecho para grifar ou adicionar uma nota ao seu caderno.

• There is (there's) + singular. There are + plural.
• Negativa: there isn't + a/an + singular; there aren't + plural.
• Também é comum there's no + substantivo: There's no problem (Não tem problema).
• Pergunta: Is there...? / Are there...? Resposta curta: Yes, there is. / No, there aren't.
• Para contar: How many + plural + are there? (Quantos... tem?).
• Em português "tem" serve para posse e para existência. Em inglês, existência é there is / there are.
• There are não tem contração na escrita. E na resposta curta afirmativa não se usa contração: Yes, there is (não Yes, there's).

• There's a problem with the payment.
  Tem um problema com o pagamento.
• There are three new invoices.
  Há três faturas novas.
• There isn't a meeting today.
  Não tem reunião hoje.
• Is there a problem? — No, there isn't.
  Tem algum problema? — Não.
• How many clients are there? — There are twelve.
  Quantos clientes tem? — Doze.
• Are there new emails? — Yes, there are.
  Tem e-mails novos? — Tem, sim.

Erros comuns

• Errado: ✗ Have a problem with the payment.Certo: ✓ There's a problem with the payment.Para dizer que algo existe, o inglês usa there is, não have.
• Errado: ✗ There is two invoices.Certo: ✓ There are two invoices.Com plural, use there are.
• Errado: ✗ Has a meeting today?Certo: ✓ Is there a meeting today?A pergunta de existência é Is there...? / Are there...?

Pratique antes de avançar

1. Descreva o lugar onde você está com cinco frases: There's a..., There are..., There isn't...
2. Transforme em pergunta e responda: There are new emails. / There's a problem. / There are two meetings today.
