Should dá conselho ou recomendação. É mais leve que have to e must, e é a forma educada de sugerir algo a um colega sem soar como ordem.
Regras
Selecione um trecho para grifar ou adicionar uma nota ao seu caderno.
- Should + base, mesma forma para todas as pessoas: I should, she should, they should.
- Negativa: shouldn’t. Pergunta: Should I...? / Should we...? É ótimo para pedir opinião: Should I call the client?
- Para suavizar, use I think you should... ou Maybe we should...
- Para aconselhar a não fazer, o natural é negar o think: I don’t think you should... (mais suave que I think you shouldn’t...).
- Should também indica o que é esperado: The payment should arrive today (deve chegar hoje, é o normal).
- Ought to = should, mas é mais raro no inglês americano e quase nunca aparece em perguntas ou negativas.
- Força, da mais leve para a mais forte: should (conselho), have to (obrigação), must (regra, obrigação forte). Cuidado: You’d better... parece é melhor você..., mas pode soar como aviso ou ameaça. Entre colegas, prefira should.

You should not to do that.Certo: I don't think you should do that.Should não leva to. I don’t think you should... é uma forma suave de aconselhar. I think you shouldn’t... também é gramatical, com uma recomendação negativa mais direta. - Errado:
You must use the new template. (conselho a um colega)Certo: You should use the new template.Para conselho entre colegas, must soa como ordem ou regra. Should é o tom certo. - Errado:
The payment must arrive today. (querendo dizer: deve chegar)Certo: The payment should arrive today.
- Reescreva de forma mais suave: You have to change this code. You must call the client now. You can’t send it like this.
- Escreva três perguntas com Should I...? que você poderia fazer ao seu gestor esta semana.
